An Elegant Retreat: A Sheltered Garden in Mareil-sur-Mauldre

In Mareil-sur-Mauldre, HORUS Paysages took on the challenge of transforming a small sheltered garden while preserving a sense of openness. The view of the surrounding wooded land guided the entire design.

The main goal was to create a refined natural retreat. The space needed to maintain the occupants’ privacy without blocking the view, combining aesthetics, functionality, and environmental respect.

1. A sheltered Garden that Opens to Nature

When designing a garden, it’s essential to analyze the natural assets of the land. The garden in Mareil-sur-Mauldre had an exceptional view of a large wooded area. This potential led to choices that maximized the sense of space.

  • Marking the boundary without closing off: To preserve this visual openness, we used free-form hedges. These plantings filter the view while maintaining natural transparency. They create subtle intimacy without blocking the surrounding landscape.
  • Acacia equestrian fence: Unlike traditional fences, this one gently defines the space. Its discreet structure highlights the area without overwhelming it, offering a visual continuity with neighboring lands.

With this approach, the garden blends harmoniously with its environment. It offers a sense of freedom and escape while maintaining the owners’ comfort.

2. Elegant Simplicity: A Subtle and Refined Plant Palette

In this project, plant selection played a central role. The plant palette had to meet two requirements: ease of maintenance and aesthetic refinement.

  • Grasses for their lightness and texture: Plants like pennisetum and calamagrostis add soothing movement. Their ability to evolve through the seasons makes them ideal for a lively and elegant garden.
  • Free-form hedges for natural boundaries: We selected shrubs with varied foliage, such as dogwood and field maple. These hedges structure the space while blending seamlessly with the landscape.
  • A garden in harmony with the seasons: Each plant was chosen to offer a different visual experience throughout the year. The golden tones of autumn follow the vibrant colors of spring and summer.

This mix of grasses and free-form hedges gives the garden a unique identity. It becomes a living canvas, where every detail contributes to the overall harmony.

3. A Simple and Natural Design for Refined Escape

This garden needed to be both refined and easy to live in. The entire design is based on simple geometry, highlighting the natural volumes and plantings.

  • Structuring the space with clean lines: Hedges and lawns are designed fluidly, creating relaxation zones where each space finds its place within the whole.
  • Natural and elegant pathways: Natural stone paths invite strolls. They guide the eye through the garden while reinforcing the sense of simplicity.
  • Creating quiet corners for contemplation: Small areas, like a bench surrounded by grasses or a shaded spot framed by hedges, offer peaceful moments. These intimate spaces give a personal touch to the garden.

By playing with volumes and subtle transitions, this design ensures an immersive experience. Luxury here lies in simplicity and respect for natural forms.

4. Acacia Equestrian Fence: Elegance and Functionality

The equestrian fence is a key element of the project. It combines functionality and aesthetics while enhancing the garden’s natural identity.

  • Durable and aesthetic material: Acacia wood was chosen for its strength and authentic look. Its natural color blends with the surrounding plants.
  • Defining without separating: This fence does not enclose the space. It structures the garden while allowing the eye to wander beyond the property’s limits.
  • A touch of rustic chic: While discreet, the equestrian fence adds unique character to the garden. It underscores the balance between modernity and tradition.

This simple yet characterful architectural feature plays a crucial role in the garden’s visual coherence. It preserves the owners’ privacy without disconnecting from nature.

5. A Low-Maintenance sheltered Garden: The Art of a Living Landscape

For discerning clients, a garden must be as practical as it is beautiful. This project integrates sustainable solutions to reduce maintenance while maximizing aesthetic impact.

  • Low-maintenance grasses and perennials: These plants require minimal resources. They adapt easily to their environment, reducing the need for watering and pruning.
  • Minimal seasonal upkeep: The free-form hedges and grasses need little intervention. An annual trim is enough to maintain their elegance.
  • Expert care from a qualified gardener: The garden is maintained by Tristan Bellier, an experienced gardener. His expertise ensures each plant stays vibrant and beautiful throughout the seasons.

These practical and sustainable choices make the garden both functional and aesthetic. It aligns with an environmentally respectful approach while meeting high-end expectations.

This sheltered garden, designed by HORUS Paysages in Mareil-sur-Mauldre, is a tribute to nature and refined simplicity. By using elements like grasses, free-form hedges, and the acacia equestrian fence, it successfully combines intimacy, openness, and natural elegance.

Designed to evolve with the seasons and minimize maintenance, this space offers its owners a true sanctuary. Every detail, from plant selection to volume design, reflects a search for balance between aesthetics and functionality.

A garden is not just a landscape. It’s an experience, an invitation to contemplation, and harmony with nature.
